What If the Divine Was Already Within You?

In my NIV translation of the Hebrew Bible, the first mention of the word already comes in the story of the three visitors that visited Abraham and Sarah. The lord appeared to Abraham in the heat of the day and Abraham saw three men standing nearby. Abraham asks the lord if he has received favor from the three men, let him rest under the trees with some water to wash his feet. Abraham offers to get them something to eat and Abraham hurries to Sarah to bake some bread for them. Abraham then ran to his herd and chose a calf from his herd for milk and meat to serve under a tree. The three men asked Abraham where Sarah is and promised Abraham this time next year Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent and both Abraham and Sarah recognized they were already very old, past the childbearing age. Sarah laughed to herself and thought she was worn out, too old to have the pleasure of a child. The lord asked Abraham why Sarah laughed and questioned if she will really have a child in her old age. The lord asks a rhetorical question, if anything is too hard for it to do, and promises it will return next year and Sarah will have a son. Sarah responded in fear, replying she did not laugh, however Abraham denied her claim and said she did laugh.

I believe there are some key points I would like to highlight in this interaction between Sarah, Abraham and the three men. Based on Sarah’s experience, she chuckles at the promise of the three men who have promised her a child in the next year. Though the three men and the lord appeared to Abraham and Sarah, Sarah found it hard to accept the spiritual guidance she received on childbearing, due to her perspective. Sarah’s inner temple or construct of what she already knows contrasts with the statements she received from the supposed authority she respects. I believe this story shows the power of the divine, the mystery of the supernatural, that somehow even when approached by mystical beings, it is difficult to accept our role within the tapestry of human life especially when it conflicts with one’s current perception of who one is.

Already Explored

I believe the story of Abraham and Sarah and the three visitors is one of many examples of women empowerment in the Hebrew Bible and the competence of women in ancient traditions. Though women have been given vital roles for calling in the next generation of humans, I believe sometimes human intuition can be an obstacle in becoming the fullest version of oneself. Sarah appeared to struggle with embodying her older age, seeing herself as too old to contribute to the orchestrated plan of the Creator. The farther you go in the story, Abraham and Sarah’s doubt leads them to pursue alternative routes of completing the multiple promises the lord has given them, going as far as using Abraham’s servant to bear a child for Sarah. I believe doubt is one of the first steps to opening our eyes to the spiritual realm. I believe recognizing the mystery of the divine can awaken an individual to what can be accomplished in one’s spirit when aligned with the vision of the Creator.

In the Highest Self Podcast, Sahara Rose teams up with Shiva Rose to discuss reclaiming feminine power and embracing the wisdom held within the womb1. Towards the middle of the podcast, Sahara asks why the porn industry is such a huge industry2? Sahara is shocked at the vastness of porn available, stating that 80% of the internet is pornography3. Shive responds to Sahara’s statement, caught off guard by what she seems to believe is a high percentage4. Sahara believes it’s crazy so much pornography is also on the dark web, where there are porn stars who are doing the act intentionally5. Sahara reflects on how this industry is so prevalent, and if there has been a time in human history where people rely on watching other people have sex for them to have sex6. Sahara is confident this is not natural, and points out it’s specifically not natural for children7. Sahara is heartbroken by the idea that there are children watching porn already, how the average age to start watching porn for a boy is 11 years old8. Sahara correlates this to the reason middle schools are dealing with a lot of pornography addictions in boys, even going to the bathroom in their breaks during the school day9. Jumping ahead in the podcast, Shiva asks Sahara how powerful our lineages are10. Shiva shares a hypothetical, if her grandmother was holding her mother, her eggs were already formed within her mother11. This idea is surreal for Shiva, and explains why people are most connected to their maternal grandmother12.

Sahara and Shiva go throughout the podcast connecting their personal experiences with their femininity and their yoni, to the harmful behaviors that our society enacts upon one another. Shiva’s story of how she feels most connected to her maternal grandmother is elaborated further, sharing the lineage from the womb’s perspective instead of the patriarchal tradition a lot of modern culture is rooted in. Though it is not highlighted as a specific ancestral practice, I appreciate the perspective she offers into the womb connection she feels to her maternal lineage. I believe Shiva’s practices are an insight into modern spirituality that values personal connections to one’s culture, a practice I believe has been lost to major world religions. I would encourage you to explore your feminine side, already admiring the powerful women you come from, and build off their legacy to embrace your own unique archetypes.

Already Complex

I recently have been struggling with my role working in the education industry. I do believe education is very beneficial in one’s spiritual journey, however I struggle with general education, requiring students to study subjects that are not their passions. I would hope one day education moves away from the format of one teacher teaching multiple students to one mentor guiding one student. A version of education that is uniquely individualized to each person, allowing the student to choose the path they believe is best for themselves. If I was able to test this version of education, my biggest question I would like to experiment with is how much of a role the mentor has on the individuals’ inner awakening or if this spiritual spark will be ignited by the guru within the student.

In The Sadhguru Podcast, Sahguru enlightens his audience on the role of a guru in a seeker’s life13. Towards the end of the podcast, Sadhguru shares his belief that a guru is a live road map14. Sadhguru gives a hypothetical, if one travers uncharted terrain and they don’t have a road map, what one might be looking for might take a lifetime, even if it’s right next to them15. Sadhguru expresses his sadness with this reality most spiritual seekers reside in16. Sadhguru doesn’t believe finding what’s within oneself should take a lifetime17. Sadhguru counters that if this individual is willing to take directions on how to be the best version of oneself, they might find it sooner18. Sadhgru shares his own experience of his time trekking through the Himalayas, through Nepal and Tibet, he runs into a Sherpa, a skilled mountaineer in the Himalayas19. Sadhguru trusts the Sherpa in whatever instruction they give him because the Sherpa is someone who already knows and has traveled the terrain20. Sadhguru believes it is best to take instructions, best to listen, otherwise things will become unnecessarily complicated21. Sadhguru hopes that if one is to embrace the gurus around them, they may know the peaks of their inner nature22.

Sadhguru relays the complexity of life, the depth of the tapestry of human experience and perspective. Though I don’t agree with everything Sadhguru stated, I do agree on his points of the guru being a live road map in a person’s life. How this guru can reveal to a person what might be within an individual their whole life. However, the human would need to learn how to be directed by this guru, how to make the advice the guru gives to benefit their own individual journey. Whether it is through physically treacherous terrain or the inner peaks and valleys within our spirit, I believe the guru residing within us can be an answer to approaching the complexity already dwelling within us.
