What If Wealth Flowed Like the Ocean?

I’m not the biggest fan of the book of Leviticus, but this book was the earliest mention of financial prosperity I could find in the NIV translation of the Hebrew Bible. Leviticus describes the Year of Jubilee and what to do if one of their fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property1. In this case, the nearest relative is supposed to redeem what they have sold2. I The hypothetical continues, if the poor individual has no one to redeem the property for them and later on they begin to prosper financially, they should assess if they have the means to buy the property back3. If their funds are sufficient based on the value of years since they sold it and refund the balance to who they sold the property to4. If the poor individual does not have the means to pay, the property sold should be returned to the poor individual during the year of Jubilee5. Later on in the laws, the Israelites are instructed that if a person becomes poor and unable to support themselves, they should help them as if they are a foreigner so they can continue to live around them6. The Israelites are commanded to not take any profit from them, but to fear god7. The Israelites are told not to lend them money or sell them food at a profit8. The law poses another hypothetical, if an Israelite becomes poor and sells themselves to another Israelite, they should not become slaves to them9. The poor individual should be treated as a temporary resident until the Year of Jubilee10. The poor individual and their children should be released in the Year of Jubilee to their own clans and to their ancestral property11. God claims Israelites should not be slaves because of their Egyptian history12. If you want to study this further, read the rest of Leviticus 25.

Financial abundance is mentioned quite a bit in the book of Leviticus and continues to be a goal in American capitalist society. I have studied the correlation between the rise of capitalism and the rise of Christianity, and wonder how much our culture might have contributed to what some call the Prosperity Gospel, god blesses followers with wealth, health, and happiness13. Furthermore, I wonder how a Prosperity Gospel culture impacts how people express themselves, in their creative fashion or in their artistic collection. I want to take into account financial strategies, cultural experiences, and potential for creativity in this exploration.

Practical Wealth

I recently saw a post on Reddit in the Manifestation community, where someone apparently manifested 6 figures to $6 million 3 years ago and achieved it. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the post, so you’ll have to take my word for it. Anyways, financial aspirations are all over the community, where people claim if they visualize the person of themselves they want to be, with the money they want to have. The community emphasizes believing you can make the money you want to have, whether it being consciously or subconsciously, and reprogramming your brain to believe it can happen for you too. I believe the stories shared with these strategies are meant to encourage their audience that they can have an effortless flow of wealth.

On the Highest Self Podcast, Sahara has a discussion with Ajit Nawalkha about money and how to shift one’s mindset to acquire it14. Ajit shares his original path of becoming an engineer and doing a lot of computer bug testing15. Ajit thinks bug testing is one of the most boring things on earth, and decided he didn’t think this would be a fun career16. Ajit likes creating, and acknowledges his creative energy, and decides he wants to make money, but he wants to like his life17. Ajit elaborates further, he doesn’t want to hate everything that he does, which led him to find people to educate him on how to become wealthier in life while living a better life18. Ajit got introduced to lots of individuals and worked multiple jobs to learn from others19. Ajit seemed to always work with people who are in education, labeling them as givers, teachers, educators, and helpers20. Ajit believes people who work in education’s drive is to help people, and these teachers were also wealthy21. Ajit decided to learn lessons from the wealthy teachers early, and he really took off when he came across a company called Mindvalley22. Jumping ahead Sahara talks about some of the stories people tell themselves about having a lot of money, “the more money the more I have to manage, the more problems will come into my life, less money means more safety and more control”23. Ajit responds, suggesting this narrative may be created unconsciously by rich people, to keep others at bay24. Ajit reasserts his claim, asking if anybody would try to get rich if they are not willing to take the risk25. Ajit points out the wealthier you are, the less you actually have to manage26.

Sahara and Ajit’s conversation was very eye opening to me, sharing personal anecdotes as well as theories of belief. They share plenty of perspectives on money, how it could build problems and how it could alleviate problems. They share perspectives on how money could bring value to your life, and impact how other people value your life. They share perspectives on self-worth, how living in survival mode adds obstacles to becoming the best version of yourself, but also the necessity of being able to pay rent and other expenses to sustain one’s livelihood. Sahara’s discussion revealed to me my own subconscious insecurities about the amount of money I have, the amount of money I’m making, and the amount of money I want to have. I believe and I am working on reframing what financial ease and financial abundance looks for myself and for others to live in harmony with myself and those around me.

Paul Van Der Merwe once said, “Money makes the world go round”, however when I researched this quote I realized there was more to the quote. “Money makes the world go round; however, happiness greases the axle. Without this lubricant, life will seize”27. I think Ajit learned this lesson at a younger age than most, and could be one of the reasons he has the platform he has today. Ajit decided he didn’t just want to have the means to survive on our cycling planet, but he wanted to thrive in happiness while making money. I’m not a money expert like Ajit, however, I would suggest reevaluating the way you look at your financial reality. I would recommend shifting your mindset, moving from how you could make/save the most money, and moving towards how you could make enough money to live a happy life. This may sound like an overwhelming task, but I would say start my being practical, sticking to one thing that makes you happy, and allow those experiences to make connections, spark creativity, and build your own wealth.

Culinary Wealth

I’ve never been a big fan of tuna, however, I have found a lot of cultures use tuna in their dishes. I found a Jewish “Deli-Style” Tuna Fish Salad, that combines ingredients of tuna, mayo, onions, and celery, a light and fluffy meal to make and eat when you don’t feel like leaving the house28. How about a Tuna Fish Masala, a dish crafted from leftover fish that comes to life with some lemon juice29. Think about a Beautiful Asian Style Pan-Seared Tuna, a healthy, hearty and delicious meal packed with flavor30. Imagine a Greek-Style Tuna Salad, a wholesome meal filled with cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, and fresh herbs31. Maybe even a tuna steak, unique and beautiful, yummy, tasty, nutritious and solid, accompanied by a salad and rice32. I could go on, but I think my point is clear, tuna has been used by plenty of cultures to sustain their livelihood, while also being an accessible option to a wide range of economic groups. Regions of the ancient world, as well as our contemporary civilization, have monetized fish such as tuna to sustain their communities’ economy.

On the Multicultural Misfits Podcast, the boys reflect on their Colorado Road trip and jump to spuds33. Spuds, otherwise known as potatoes, are getting really big in the UK, super popular34. The guys talk about one of the dishes served out of a food truck, a loaded spud, filled with cheese, baked beans, and tuna35. The boys then share how much they dislike tuna and don’t believe the UK knows anything about food36. One of the guys thinks the loaded spud would be good if you removed the tuna from the equation37. Another one of the boys adds if the beans are barbecue style beans, then he agrees with the previous take38. The last guy denies any chance of the loaded spuds having barbecue style beans and another guy jumps back in sharing the beans are sweet, like ketchup style beans39. They continue their degradation of the loaded spud, expressing the cheese isn’t even melted cheese but is shredded cheese40. Furthermore, the guys comment on how the loaded spud had a “splash” of tuna in it, not just a sprinkle of tuna41. In addition to the tuna, the beans supposedly submerge the potato, the potato becoming almost non-existent in the dish42. One of the guys jumps in saying how much he has been recommended to eat tuna salad, one of the recommenders being his girlfriend43. His girlfriend made him a tuna salad that he felt like he was being forced to eat, and his friend comments he thinks tuna salad is actually pretty good44. The guy who was forced to eat the tuna salad complains that tuna is too fishy, even with mayo, pickles, lime juice, salt and pepper45.

The “Misfits” go on to have a fun conversation, ranting about the rising food prices in grocery stores and restaurants, and debating who will win the Oscars. The boys talked about how the citizens of the UK make their loaded potatoes and share their thoughts on how appealing the meal is to each of them, suggesting ways they would improve the dish personally. Some of the guys like tuna, some don’t, some like canned tuna, some like it tossed in a salad, etc. However, I think it’s important to note how a simple fish has been incorporated in so many meals across the globe, and people have such strong opinions about a dish they have never tried. I think the loaded potato of the UK, featuring tuna, will continue to be a hit in their culture, sustaining food trucks and restaurants across the region. I think people will continue to experiment with new techniques to prepare tuna to be appetizing to themselves and their potential audience. I believe the choice is in our hands, to adapt to the evolving uses of tuna in unique combinations or to stick to traditional culinary trends.

I believe the guy’s conversation could reveal some insights into wealth. I believe the culinary path is similar to the spiritual path, drawing from tradition to flourish into our contemporary world. I believe the unique dishes today do not come as fully original ideas, but are combinations of food recipes shared over the centuries across cultures. I believe some of our modern day dishes come from unexpected clashes of culture. However they are prepared, almost all of these meals challenge conventional means of meal making, just like the loaded potato with tuna challenged the “Misfits” taste. I would challenge you to learn from the culinary path, draw from the traditions that resonate with you, combine messaging from cultures you associate with, and allow yourself to experience wealth in an unexpected way.
