Portals have a lot of definitions and I would like to reference two of them to introduce this article. The first definition is the architectural composition of a church including the doorways and porches1. The second definition of portals is an online platform that provides access to information of a specific kind2. I have never heard of a section of a place of worship being considered a portal, but I believe there is some significance to this definition. If a section of the church is considered a portal, and a church can have multiple portals, I believe this shows the church’s intention of facilitating connection to the spiritual realm. Broadening out from churches, I believe this could be significant for all places of worship as they attempt to join with and unite with the spirits around them. However, this makes me question whether the different portals within the place of worship are claiming to lead people to the same spirit. Moreover, I wonder if the different places of worship are claiming to direct people to the same experience of the divine.
I have never thought of Spectrum of Spirit as a portal, but based on the definition, this gives me a different perspective into how the platform could evolve. If you’re only aware of my blog series, Spectrum of Spirit is a website and an online platform offering podcasts, documentaries, forums, and blogs about spirituality, culture, and art. I have plans to continue this project for some seasons, and in doing so I’m excited to see how it transforms from season to season, from moment to moment. This could be the last blog I ever release, or I could also write 100+ more blogs. Either way I look forward to how this platform, my portal adapts to the present times, my own life, and the individuals that value the content I am putting out.
Unlocking Portals
I have experience with lots of coaches in my life. My parents, my teachers, my coaches and numerous others have all had a variety of impact into the man I am today. I guess you could consider it a spectrum of impact if you will. Anyways, I have experienced coaching that has benefited me and coaching that has not felt as beneficial, influencing my coaching style to this day. I believe coaching can be very powerful, and I think the best coaches guide the individual along to find another version of themselves. I believe spiritual life coaches have a unique opportunity to help others walk through the ups and downs of their journey to develop their identity. I believe spiritual life coaches have the chance to shed light on the god on high in their life and find their higher purpose.
In the Highest Self Podcast, Sahara Rose released an episode where she has live coaching with her students3. The first student highlighted is Alyssa, and after some introductory practices Sahara asks why Alyssa decided to become a Dharma coach4. Sahara points out that she thinks Alyssa is someone who has a lot of wisdom to share5. People around Alyssa kept asking her why she didn’t try making money from the wisdom she was sharing6. Sahara shares that she has friends she wants to recommend to Alyssa7. Sahara elaborates further, she affirms Alyssa has the experience and the wisdom to be a coach8. Sahara relates to Alyssa, saying that she’s been through the process, and tells her when she had the realization of becoming a coach9. Sahara says there are some things she has predicted in her life, like living in LA, becoming a vegan, etc10. Sahara saw these these things and then one day she just switched; she knew some things weren’t going to be the same, she didn’t know when, but she knew she was going to be speaking on stages, uniting people to her own community11. Sahara continues her story, she says she used to see these visions of what she will do in the future when she was a child the same way she kept seeing herself in LA12. Sahara explains that she did not want to feel like she was rushing into coaching, but because she had visions of it when she was young, she didn’t feel forced to coach13. Sahara had doubts throughout the year of her transition to coaching, she thought in her integrity, she did not feel 100%, and she was in too much pain to coach anyone14.
Throughout the episode Sahara relates to the stories of her students, and what she sees in them, so they could be the best Dharma coaches they could be. The intriguing part of Sahara’s story that stood out to me is how Sahara has grown into who she is today. In my previous experience, people set a goal, envision how they are going to achieve this goal, and possibly reach this goal. Contrary to my experiences, Sahara presents an alternative story, one where she envisions a moment she wants to experience, experiences the moment, and sets goals of how she’s going to improve her experience. I recognize this could be an over analysis or a placebo effect, however, I will stick with this perspective for the sake of the blog. Instead of Sahara setting her goals and affirming them through multiple practices, Sahara saw a possible version of herself and affirmed her vision. Sahara holds herself accountable, remembering her vision, and using that potential future to guide her personal and spiritual development.
Sahara shares her story of transformation into a coach and relates to the strengths she’s seen in Alyssa and other students to her own story. Alyssa and the other students were inspired by the work Sahara has been doing, and Sahara is encouraged that others come to her for guidance on how to be the best Dharma coach they can be. In this way, growth has become a two-way street, opening portals for discovery for Sahara’s students, and a self-help portal for Sahara. If Sahara didn’t unlock her own platform to spiritual growth, her students would have not had their current moment to unlock their portals. Similar to how Sahara didn’t know when her visions would come to fruition, if Sahara opened up her portal at a different time, her students may have had to wait for another time to unlock their own portals. I believe coaching is a useful tool that could be beneficial for those who want to unlock their own portals, to understand and express themselves fully.
A Night Portal
New Year’s celebration has always been a complicated experience for me. I was born on New Year’s Eve, and when I was younger I would rarely have my birthday party on the day of my birth because my friends had New Year’s plans with their families. The significance of my birthday didn’t mean much then and doesn’t mean much now but I do believe there is some significance to the night of New Year’s Eve. I believe there is spiritual significance to New Year’s Eve, one could reflect on the moments that have passed to inform the way they want to live their current moment.
In The Sadhguru Podcast, Sadhguru celebrates the turning of the calendar and shares his reflections on the year15. Halfway through the episode, Sadhguru acknowledges that on New Year’s Eve, a lot of people are going to make resolutions16. Sadhguru gives an example of a husband who says he will not fight his wife17. The wife then questions how her husband won’t fight with her, who will her husband fight with.18 Sadhguru believes this is an example of people who will make resolutions and break them in no time and suggests not taking resolutions and aim to make one’s life very exuberant19. Sadhguru believes if your life is bubbling with energy, you will never feel lonely20. Sadhguru elaborates further, when your life is bubbling with energy, your body, mind, and emotions can be put towards what you want21. Sadhguru believes people feel lonely, because their body, mind, and emotions are spilling all over the place and their energy is not intense22. Later on, Sadhguru states his blessing, hoping everyone dies a failure23. Sadhguru explains this is his blessing because humans set up childish goals in their lives24. Sadhguru shares an example of someone who’s goal is to have their own house and how that person’s pain is rooted in the fact they don’t have their own house25. In this example, Sadhguru believes the desire for ownership of a house is a big problem26. Sadhguru believes if a person reaches their silly goals, they will die and be successful. On the contrary, Sadhguru believes, if a person looks at their human potential and pursues what they want, they will die a failure because it will take lifetimes to complete that work27. Because of this, it is Sadhguru’s wish that everyone dies a failure, but a blissful failure28.
Similar to Sahara, Sadhguru has portions of his teaching that revolve around goal setting, focusing on ways of restructuring goal setting from traditional understanding. Sadhguru shares his message on New Year’s Eve, a day with spiritual significance, to encourage awareness of one’s body, mind, and emotions. Sadhguru emphasized his belief in the importance of living life with exuberant energy, to power you out of a season of loneliness. Sadhguru shares his blessing and hope, for humans to live their life and consider themselves a failure. Sadhguru doesn’t wish failure for humanity out of ill will, but to encourage one to see their full potential and pursue it fully, accepting all they have done in their efforts to become the best version of themselves.
I believe Sahara and Sadhguru’s reflection on goals, how they form, and how to approach them, could be beneficial for accessing the spiritual potential I believe is in every being. I believe taking a moment to try to align your mind, body and emotions together, could help you make more conscious decisions on how you want to represent yourself. I believe removing a desire for traditional goal setting, like New Year’s resolutions, could facilitate an individual being more intentional in their daily life. I believe Sadhguru’s night of teaching opened me to a new perspective, a night portal, not through the traditional settings of a place of worship, but through worshiping life in whatever place you’re in.
